In biblical times, names were more than labels. Biblical names make statements about the character of those who bore them. A name reveals the character, nature and purpose of a person's life. In other words, a name defines who a person is. A faithful reading of the Bible leads to a unique discovery-Jesus' prominence and preeminence. He fills the pages of the Scriptures. One way this is vividly expressed in the Word of God, is in the many names or titles used in His description. In all of human history, no one has been referred to in a variety of ways than the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The names or titles used in the description of Jesus in the Bible reveal a lot about who He is. Each name or title says something unique about His Person, purpose, character, and nature. In other words, each name or title has significance and helps us in understanding who Jesus really is. For example, the title "the Chief Cornerstone" teaches that Jesus is the sure foundation for life. His title "the Good Shepherd" signifies that Jesus is provider and caretaker of His flock. His title "the Holy One of God" reveals that Jesus is sinless in His nature. He had no sin. He committed no sin. He is without sin. Also His title "the Lamb of God" describes Him as One who gave His life as God's perfect sacrifice for our sins. The title, "the Son of Man" is a title that identifies Jesus with us as One who actually shared in our humanity. This is the title Jesus frequently used to refer to Himself. His title "Prophet" tells us that Jesus is the faithful proclaimer of the truths of God. His name "Immanuel" reminds us of His abiding presence with us in all circumstances of life. Also, His title, "Light of the World" signifies that Jesus is the One who brings hope and direction in the midst of our darkness. His title, "Alpha and Omega" reveals to us that Jesus is the beginning and ending of all things. His title "Savior" sets Jesus apart as the One who alone delivers sinners from sin and death. So, as you can see, knowing the names or titles of Jesus and understanding their significance can greatly enhance our worship of Jesus Christ. It helps us in exalting Jesus for who He really is. This is the purpose of this article. It is to assist us in our daily worship of Jesus as He is truly revealed in the Scriptures. Also, it is to prepare us for eternal worship of Jesus Christ. It is very important for us to learn to worship the Person of the Lord Jesus in a manner befitting His greatness and glory. The only way we can do that successfully and effectively is to rely on the Scripture. Relying on our own imagination to worship Jesus is unacceptable and unfit for the Christ of God. It is an insult to Him who is worthy of excellent praise. It does not give Jesus the glory that is rightly and truly due His great and awesome name. That is why I personally rely on the Spirit's help, and continually look into the mirror of God's Word in order to offer worship that is acceptable to and appropriate for King Jesus. Please listen carefully! When it comes to true worship of the one True God, He doesn't leave us to our puny imaginations. Rather, He points us to His inspired, infallible, inerrant and indestructible Word. His Word gives us a clear picture of who He really is. It is my prayer that as you read, review, and reflect on the titles or names of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, your worship of Him would be taken to a new level and better prepare you for a lifetime of exalting, celebrating, and praising Him who alone is worthy of excellent and eternal praise.
Over the many years I have been privileged to study and fellowship with the Lord, I have highlighted the names or titles of Jesus in my Bible (NASB). So, I am simply going to list the names or titles from Matthew to Revelation. Several of the titles are repeatedly used throughout the Bible. However, I am not going to repeat them in this work. For example, the titles "Son of Man," "Jesus Christ," and "Lord" are repeatedly used in all the four Gospels. "Jesus Christ" and "Lord" are also used extensively in Acts, the Epistles and the Pastoral Letters. But I am only going to make mention of them once, except where there is a variation. Although I would have loved to state the significance of each title or name, I realized that would require a lot more work. Perhaps in the future that can be done. For your easy reading, each title or name is given with its reference or references. As you read these names and titles, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the significance of each name or title to your spirit.

In Revelation 19:12, the Bible says that Jesus has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. In the same chapter the Lord Jesus has been variously referred to as, "the Lamb," "Faithful and True," "The Word of God," and "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." Although God revealed to us several names and titles of Jesus in order to enhance our understanding of who He really is and our worship of Him, there is a name of Christ that He had not disclosed to us. This is to teach us that the secrets things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belonged to us (see Deuteronomy 29:29). There are mysteries connected with the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ that no created being will ever be able to understand. Although Apostle John was in the Spirit, he was unable to perceive the name let alone discern its meaning. However, that did not stop John from worshiping the Risen and Glorified Lord. Similarly, we do not need to know the unrevealed name of Jesus before giving Him the worship that is due Him. God has revealed so much of who He is to us. We must use what is made known to us of Jesus to worship Him as He really deserves.
